rivero good morning, everyone, i'm tanya rivero in for diana perez. >> i'm john muller. here are the top headlines we are following this morning on "world news now." the senate's deal to expand background checks to virtually all gun sales is gain sag port. backers say they still need more votes. that deal and other gun control measures expected to be voted on this week. >> two separate avalanches tore down the cascade mountains in washington state this weekend slamming into some snowshoers out for a hike. a woman died after rescuers dug her out of the snow. a man is missing and presumed dead. florida police officer fired after he brought targets resembling trayvon martin to the shooting range. martin the florida teenager killed by a neighborhood watch captain last year. and adam scott the first australian to ever win the masters. he hit a long putt on the second playoff hole yesterday to defeat argentina's angel cabrera.

australian golfers took three of the top four places. those are some of our top stories on this monday, april 15th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, everybody. i'm john muller. >> i'm tanya rivero in for diana perez. great to see you again. always fun to wake up in the middle of the night. >> did you see any masters? >> little bit. tried to take a nap. couldn't catch too much. it was fun what i saw. >> i missed the end. i had my buddy in long island, texting me what happened. >> exciting game for sure. >> absolutely. we begin this half-hour with the biggest holiday of the year in north korea. thou sand paying their respects to the country's founder, kim il-sung and kim jong-un. >> celebrations went on as usual despite the growing tensions over the nuclear threat. abc's correspondent reports on the diplomatic efforts.

>> reporter: in international marathon dominated headlines in pyongyang on the streets, flags marking north korean founder kim il-sung's 101 birthday today. speculating that kim jong-un would launch a missile to mark the holiday, but in tokyo sunday, secretary of state john kerry urged pyongyang to opt for a peaceful resolution. >> we can find a way to resolve these differences at a negotiating table. i hope they will hear that. >> reporter: kerry's visit here the last leg of an asia trip aimed at temporary tensions on the korean peninsula. in japan where 47,000 u.s. troops are based there is increasing unease. pyongyang has singled out japan as the first target in case of war. and with its mid range missiles within striking range, tokyo has deployed destroyers and missile batteries in the center of the capital. those interceptors back there are pointed directly at north

korea. and with pyongyang 800 miles away, defense officials here say they are ready to shoot down any missile that threatens japan. north korea's missiles have flown over japan before. >> translator: constantly worried about another launch happening this student says. i don't know how accurate the missiles are. >> reporter: behind the scenes there is a push for dialogue led by the south korean president park geun-hye. kerry reiterated support for north korean engagement sunday but that has done little to quiet concerns here. and the loser in venezuela's presidential race is demanding a recount. he lost a very close race to his contender, hand pecked for the job by the late dictator, hugo chavez. the count gave it to one contender. both sides claimed voter fraud in the hours after the polls closed.

>> the latest on the bird flu crisis in china. the mysterious virus turned up in beijing over the weekend raising fears it could spread beyond china's borders. dr. richard besser now reports from china. >> reporter: china is on high alert. not because of the crisis in north korea but because the deadly new strain of bird flu is extending its reach. beginning in shanghai, the virus has been inching its way across the map. connecting the dots between eastern provinces to the capital beijing where a case was reported. the two latest cases, were in henan province. health officials are warning this outbreak is still far from contained. >> we still expect there will be other cases. awareness its now very high. >> reporter: we traveled to hong kong's border with the mainland. the major fear here is viruses don't care about borders. >> all of these people are coming from mainland china. you can understand why in hong kong, they're concerned about any health problem on the mainland. it is not going to stay there.

not just tens of thou sand of people who cross the border every day, but also the live poultry. a lot of the poultry end up in places like this. crowded, open-air markets. there is now a growing backlash to the practice. one newspaper reporting, hong kong should rekid a ban on all live poultry stalls. cdc has a diagnostic kit that can identify the virus. scientist will need all the time to develop a viable immunization. hopefully before the outbreak makes another leap. we will be visiting isolation wards that hong kong set up in case the flu continues to spread and show you what it takes to really be prepared. dr. richard besser, abc news, hong kong. >> this version of the bird flu is different from the one in previous years because it is not making the bird all that sick. so it is very hard to track. >> right. >> and i heard there are 11 new cases sunday alone. so this is, this is spreading

very, very quickly. china by the way is the world's second largest poultry producer behind the u.s. this bird flu is taking a toll on their economy. >> death toll stand at 13. >> scary stuff for sure. moving on now. in texas there is a possible break in the case of who murdered a district attorney along with his wife. prosecutor mike mclelland and his wife cynthia were killed in late march. police arrest aid former justice of the peace, 46-year-old eric lyle williams, he is held on unrelated charges. authorities did search his home friday. will yamz was prosecuted by mclelland last year for stealing three computer monitors. williams was convicted and put on probation. a notorious french gangster on the loose after he pulled off an escape from a high security prison. as abc's lama hasan reports. he clearly had a little help from the outside. >> reporter: a europe wide manhunt is now under way for this man, one of the most feared armed robbers in france.

police swarming the high security prison searching for clues. after fayed escaped using dynamite to blast through five heavily fortified doors in this high security prison. he took four prison guard hostage. police believe his wife acted as his accomplice. by smuggling the explosives into the prison wrapped in handkerchiefs. we heard a shot. then one explosion. then a second explosion. this eyewitness said. after the first explosion, the guards came out to tell us to find safety. it is a daring prison break straight out of a hollywood movie. he has admitted he thinks of himself as a modern day gangster, a life of crime inspired by "heat" each wearing a hockey mask just look robert de niro. once outside the prison. fayed released the guard before fleeing in a getaway car, later found torched. 100 french investigators are now searching for the notorious gangster they say is armed "and

especially dangerous." lama hasan, abc news. in el paso, texas it took 200 pound of dynamite and mere eight second to bring down what used to be the ten-story city hall building. the demolition is part of the revitalization plan for the downtown area. once the rubble is all cleared away construction is set to begin on a new triple baseball stadium. >> pretty good implosion as far as implosions go. >> yeah. >> powerful april blizzard hammering the northern plains leaving parts of north dakota buried under a foot of snow. snow came down fast, furious, strong wind. whiteout conditions. visibility so bad. 100 mile stretch of interstate 94 had to be shut down. and more snow in the area today. it will be coming down in north dakota again along with minnesota, the rockies, west of denver getting snow, as well as higher elevations in the northwest sam. veer storms stretching from oklahoma into the midwest. also rain in florida. >> it will be 87, miami.

imminent. however everything could change in an instant. lana zak, south korea. >> the bird flu and the outbreak that may spread outside of china as the death toll rises to 13 there. first case reported in beijing over the weekend as the flu moves across china. now, four international flau experts will be arriving to help china pinpoint the source of the flu and how it is being transmilted. to venezuela now where hugo chavez's hand picked successor won a close presidential election. he managed to pull ahead of the two time challenger. intense moments that led up to the final results. beth sides suggested this election was rigged. the winner will carry on chavez's socialist revolution. the faa ordering inspections of a large number of airline jets. 1,000 boeing 737 jets. a workhorse of the industry need inspections of their horizontal stabilizers. the stabilizers control the up and down movement of the jet's

choice of targets reported sergeant ron king. king admits having the trayvon martin targets with the faceness figure in the hoody. even with the skittles and iced tea. and offered this apology. >> i would look to start my statement by apologizing to the family of trayvon martin for being used as a pawn in some body's political jenn. >> reporter: in the six men out address, king claims he intended to use targets never fired upon as an example of what not to shoot at. >> and the target was something that i viewed as an example of a no shoot situation. >> reporter: the individually seemed reminiscen't of this video. >> this is george zimmerman. >> shot by george zimmerman. in the re-enactment he claimed self defense, saying martin was bashing his head into the pavement when fired. whatever their intent the latest use of the targets sold last may reignited tensions less than two months before zimmerman's second degree murder trel its street to begin. matt gutman. abc news, miami. deadline day for filing

kim jong-un. do you know what his age is? what he is like? it seemed the young general was everywhere we went from stadiums to the public squares, but never uttered a word. we should point out when kim jong-il's father named him as heir apparent in 1980 it wasn't until 12 years later that he first spoke in public. so for those anxious to hear from the next leader of the kingdom, sit tight, it could be a while. you should know north korea has long turned its lights off at night because of a shortage of electricity. if you looked at the satellite view you can see the lights are elsewhere. compare this trip to the last one i was on. there is actually more lights out at night than before. maybe something is changing. also remember, three days ago there were almost no pictures of kim jong-un, heir apparent. but here in the leading paper, you can see him right there. two seats away from his father.

founder, kim il-sung. the missile, known as musudan, has never been fired before and the likely trajectory would send it over japan toward the pacific ocean. the u.s. put patriot missile interceptors in key positions and has ships and satellite surveillance across the region just in case. perhaps the most important meeting of the weekend was in china. north korea's only real ally. secretary kerry is trying to get china to put some teeth into their efforts to persuade kim jong-un to stop developing nuclear weapons it is not clear how much pressure china is willing to apply. despite tensions signs of normalcy on both sides of the border. in pyongyang they ran an international marathon this weekend. in seoul, music star psy, streamed a concert on youtube which drew record viewers. life going on as usual under the military threat. the north rejected an offer from the south to talk, calling it a cunning ploy.

so the launch could happen sometime today, we don't know when or if. bob woodruff, abc news, seoul. and the faa ordering inspections of a large number of airline jets. but insists this is not an emergency. at least 1,000 boeing 737 jets, a workhorse of the industry need inspections on their horizontal stabilizers. those stabilizers control the up and down movement of the jet's nose. no accidents have been reported. and the faa is not grounding the jets. a possible break in the case of who murdered a district attorney in texas. along with his wife. da mike mclelland and his wife cynthia were killed in late march. now a former justice of the peace, eric lyle williams, is in custody. he is being held on unrelated charges. authorities did search his home friday. williams was prosecuted by mclelland last year for stealing three computer monitors. williams was convicted and put on probation. on capitol hill, the senate's gun control debate
